terre rare

The project aims to continue the path of exploration to relate the history and spaces of Caccia al Piano with the interventions of contemporary artists. Our purpose is to highlight the connection that can be established between the languages of art and the winemaking process.

The path starts with the outdoor sculpture ‘Eight Mask Cone,’ by Francesco Cavaliere, which will be activated by a performance describing the place and leading to the work ‘Germoglio’ by
Remo Salvadori, symbol of fertility and renewal. The exhibition continues with a group of works by Namsal Siedlecki highlighting the winemaking process through a workshop for the production of sculptures that, during the exhibition period, will alter the rooms along with some works in sulfur, glass and ash that will emphasize the power of the planet’s native materials.

The narrative concludes inside the ageing cellar where the light work ‘Lament’ by duo Claire Fontaine leads to emblematic images of universal creation and the sacred aspect.
Lastly we arranged for our visitors the works of Remo Salvadori made of conductive materials that will complementing the cycle of the exhibition.

FRANCESCO CAVALIERE

Otto cono maschera is a polished brass sound sculpture, capable of amplifying the voice and sound blown into it with its horizontal and vertical megaphones. For Terre Rare, the instrument amplifies the sounds dedicated to the landscape of Bolgheri and to the sky that waters and warms its lands.

REMO SALVADORI

Germoglio are two artworks placed on the outside and at the heart of the winery. Experimenting with the circle shape since the early 80’s, the artist created a figure that arises from the relationship -the encounter – of five circles, each one originated from a different centre. A real focusing exercise.

CLAIRE FONTAINE

The exhibition path ends in the ageing cellar, where the artwork Untitled Lament is placed. The work is a pixelated detail of Giotto’s masterpiece ‘The Lamentation over the Dead Christ’ – photographed from the cracked screen of a smartphone. The work recovers the format and the visual strategy of the advertising lightbox, transforming it into an open question about what we see and what we believe we see.

NAMSAL SIEDLECKI

For Terre Rare, Namsal Siedlecki presents 3 pieces:
Inspired by Auguste Rodin’s sculpture of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, who devoured his own children, Siedlecki creates a copy in sulphur – Fago (Ugolino). The artwork is divided in 8 pieces and placed at the top of the winery’s tower.
Viandante is a galvanic vat where two copper sculptures coexist in a solution of copper sulphate, commonly known as verdigris – a substance often used in viticulture as a fungicide. The galvanic process allows a metal to move from one surface to another, using a light electric charge, activating a ritual where one object sacrifices itself to give life to another.
Limes are pieces that mix molten glass, copper and the ashes of a wolf. A tribute to the Roman people, amongst the first to use glass windows in their homes. Limes were also the word used to describe the borders of the Roman Empire. The artwork hangs in external and internal areas, as apotropaic amulets.

Ettore Favini
